Earle. A. Rainwater Memorial Library

History

The Earle A. Rainwater Memorial Library began its existence as "The Ladies Book Club" in 1906.  Miss Mollie Oden, afraid that the ladies were growing "rusty" on literary work, invited a group of women to afternoon tea.  The seven women in attendance organized a study club where they would read and review literature.  Each lady brought a book as dues to the meetings.   The books were kept in individual homes until the collection grew unmanageable.   In 1946, the Alabama Ordinance Works closed, and the USO donated several hundred books to the library.  The library was ten moved to the old city hall.  In 1963, a new library was built in its present location and in 1979, the size of the building was doubled with a new addition.
